Sacraments of Initiation

To become a Christian and form part of the Catholic Church, one must receive faith and Baptism. Baptism and faith are, in fact, so closely united that Baptism is called “the sacrament of faith.” But Baptism cannot be understood without the other two sacraments closely connected with it ? Confirmation and the Eucharist. Confirmation completes and perfects Baptism. The Eucharist is the family table to which Baptism gives access. Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist, then, together constitute Christian initiation. Even though in the Roman Catholic Church infants are baptized without immediately receiving Confirmation and the Eucharist, initiation is incomplete without these other two sacraments. Therefore, the Church decrees that Confirmation and Eucharist should be received as soon as the Church judges candidates to be prepared.   Top

Sacrament of Baptism
Infant Baptism has been the practice of the Catholic Church for many centuries. Through the sacrament one receives the risen life of Christ, becomes a member of the Church, and is encouraged to follow Christ throughout life and original sin is erased.   Top

Baptismal Preparation
Parish catechesis for Baptism is directed primarily to parents of infants who are to be baptized. In offering catechesis to parents, the Church shows its love for and eagerness to support them as well as their children (National Catechetical Directory of Catholic Bishops, 1977.) The Holy Angels baptismal program is an opportune moment for parents to grow in their own faith, to update parents’ knowledge and understanding of the new Rite of Baptism, and to make the celebration of the sacrament more than just a tradition. Classes are held monthly from August through June. Check the bulletin for announcements. Parents need to register for the class. Expectant parents are encouraged to participate in a class prior to their children's births. There are no baptisms celebrated during the Lenten season. An expectant parent blessing is given at mass four times a year. Contact: Sister Annette Grisley 229-5915   Top

Sacrament of Confirmation
The sacrament of Confirmation ritualizes the abiding presence and action of the Holy Spirit already in the parish community. Confirmation is also a time of further incorporation of the candidate into the Eucharistic parish community in all its aspects. This incorporation helps the candidate to become further immersed in the word, the worship, the service, and the fellowship of the parish community.   Top

Confirmation Preparation
Any young person who has not received the sacrament of Confirmation and is in eighth grade or older can participate in our Parish Confirmation Program. This program is a parish based 5 month process that involves the youth, their sponsors and parents. This process is in addition to the youth attending Faith Formation and/or Catholic School. Our parent/youth meeting is held in early fall and there are three sessions and a retreat experience that follows for our candidates. Each young person will participate with a sponsor and that person will participate in one of our three sessions. Contact: Jeanne Fairbanks 229-5916   The celebration of Confirmation for the 2005-06 year will be on February 5, 2006 at the 12:00 Noon Mass.   Top

Sacrament of Eucharist
The Church at the Eucharist is a structured community, a community listening to the word of God, a community in continuity with the preaching, ministry, death, and resurrection of its Lord, a community looking forward to the coming of the Kingdom, a community conscious of its sinfulness and repentant of its sins, a community convinced of the power of God’s grace, a community ready to serve others, i.e., to carry out “the breaking of the bread” beyond the Church, and a community here and now open to the presence of the Lord and Spirit.   Top

Eucharistic Preparation
The reception of First Eucharist is open to all baptized students in the second grade and older. Children attend Faith Formation classes in the parish or school for one year prior to beginning preparation for First Communion. First Eucharist will be held the weekends of April 29/30 and May 6/7. Registration is available through the Faith Formation Office and School Office.   Top

Sacraments of Healing

Two sacraments are celebrated by the Church as a sign and instrument of God’s and of Christ’s abiding healing power. The Sacrament of Penance, or Reconciliation, is for those whose bond with the Church, and ultimately with God and Christ, has been weakened or even severed by sin. The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick (formerly called Extreme Unction) is for those whose bond with God and the Church has been weakened by illness; either physical or psychological incapacity. In either case, the purpose of the sacrament is to heal and to restore morally and/or physically the member to full communion with the Church so that once again the member can participate in its life and mission. Jesus is disclosed in these sacraments as one who heals and forgives, and the Church is disclosed as a healing aid for giving community, as the sacraments of the healing and forgiving Lord.  Top

Sacrament of Reconciliation

A new understanding of the Sacrament of Penance has taken place since Vatican II. The Church calls the faithful to continual conversion and renewal. The baptized who have sinned should acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbor and have heartfelt repentance for them. For this reason the Church urges the faithful to attend penitential celebrations from time to time. The sacrament of penance includes the confession of sins, which comes from the knowledge of self before God and from contrition for those sins. Penitential celebrations are the faithful gathered as the people of God to hear the proclamation of God’s word. This invites them to conversion and renewal of life and announces the freedom from sin through the death and resurrection of Christ. The Sacrament of Penance is to be received at least once a year by each of the faithful who have attained the age of discretion.

Reconciliation Preparation
Parish children are prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation beginning in second grade and continuing through the higher grades. A special opportunity is available to study and receive the sacrament in fourth grade.   Top

Sacrament of the Annointing of the Sick

Jesus is revealed as healer of body as well as of soul, as one who ministers to the sick and the dying and who energizes their faith in the Kingdom of God and stirs their hope in eternal life. The Church encourages that the sacrament be received when one is about to receive major surgery, is in the stage of old age, is suffering from terminal illness, or in danger of death. Reception of the sacrament may take place at one’s home or in a hospital. The communal celebration of the sacrament is offered to parish members periodically after the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. Watch for an announcement in the bulletin. Please call the parish office when there is a need for the sacrament to be administered. Contact: Parish Office 229-5911     Top

Sacraments of Vocation and Commitment

All Christians are initiated into the Church through the same essential process, but not all Christians are called to live as Christians in the same mode of existence. Most are called to live in intimate union with another in marriage. Some are called to serve God in the single life. Others are called to religious life or priesthood. So fundamental are both the call to married life and the call to priesthood of the Church that each of these calls and its corresponding commitment is celebrated as a sacrament: the sacrament of Matrimony; and the sacrament of Holy Orders. Like all the sacraments, both sacraments are directed to the nature and mission of the Church. Through Matrimony, the Christian community is itself built up and manifested at its most natural, familial level. The union of Christ and his Church is symbolized (Ephesians 5:22-32). In Holy Orders, the Christian community is provided structure and direction for the exercise of its mission.   Top

Marriage Preparation Programs
The Pre-Cana Workshop is a one day workshop for those entering their first marriage. Key issues vital to the success of a marriage are discussed. Love Reborn is a workshop for couples entering a second marriage with its special issues and concerns. Both workshops focus on such issues as communication, spirituality, sexuality, finance and more. You are encouraged to attend a program several months before your wedding and register two months prior to the workshop you plan to attend. Brochures are obtained at the initial meeting of marriage preparation.  Top

Sacrament of Marriage
The Sacrament of Matrimony is the marriage covenant bond between baptized persons, which was raised by Christ to the dignity of a sacrament. Marriage is symbolized in and modeled on the love of Christ for the Church, His bride. Marriage is regulated by divine law, church law, and civil law. Holy Angels’ guidelines for the preparation of all marriages in our church are based on the liturgical documents of the Conference of Bishops, diocesan directives, and deliberations of the Pastoral Staff and Worship Commission. Parishioners (those members registered one year prior to reservation) – fee - $300; an additional fee of $150 is paid to the Music Minister. Non-parishioners – fee - $600; an additional fee of $150 is paid to the Music Minister. No reservations are taken less than six months before the wedding date. Non-parishioners will make arrangements to provide their own priest. Also, written permission from your home parish must be obtained. Preparations require at least six months notice of their intention to marry; ordinarily twelve months notice, is appropriate. Weddings are scheduled Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., or 2:30 p.m. Copies of the marriage guidelines are available in the parish office. Contact: Karen Doran 229-5912  Top

Annulments
The Catholic Church does not grant divorces, only annulments. An annulment is an official declaration that a canonically valid marriage never existed between two parties. An annulment does not say that a relationship, even a loving relationship, never existed, or that a marriage never existed, or that the children born of the canonically invalid marriage are illegitimate. Through an annulment, the Church is committed to a caring and compassionate ministry toward people who are in need. More information is available by calling the parish office for a personal appointment. Contact: Fr. Dan Meyer 229-5914   Top

Sacrament of Holy Orders
Holy Orders is the Sacrament of the New Law instituted by Christ, through which spiritual power is given together with the grace to exercise properly the respective office. The sacrament gives a permanent character, meaning that it cannot be repeated, and that it ordains one for all eternity. The Sacrament of Holy Orders as seen in scripture and the tradition of the Church is specific in that the laying on of hands is used, not only to give the Holy Spirit, but also to confer authority and spiritual powers. Men are ordained in our Church as deacons, priests and bishops. The threefold role of the ordained to teach, to minister, and to govern, is also a part of the distinctive effect of the Sacrament. Men interested in the Sacrament of Priesthood may contact a member of the Pastoral Staff for guidance and more information.   Top
